Washers, grips and brackets in Catherine Field NSW
A tie down chain is only as good as the pieces holding it together, and those pieces cost almost nothing. A washer spreads a bolt's load across the timber face instead of concentrating it under the bolt head. A triple grip ties a truss to the top plate so uplift is resisted at every truss rather than by skew nails. A bracket is only as strong as the fixings actually driven into it. The Leppington frame records two and a half kilometres from here contain all three: washers missing, triple grips recorded, bracket fixings recorded. None of them would be visible a fortnight later.
